For the health conscious consumers of these times, there are a lot options to choose from the wide range of superfoods available in the market these days. It is indeed a very exciting time to be alive especially because everything that we require (and everything that we don’t) is available to us at our doorsteps; there is no need for any excuse anymore to not make an effort to be fit.

Now what if I told you there exists a miracle berry which has a huge list of benefits associated with it and has been known to mankind since almost the Ice Age? It is one of the oldest land plants.  Curious already? The Greek were amazed by this wonder fruit’s potential and claimed that it was the main food source of the mythical winged horse Pegasus. This revolutionary fruit was first documented in a Tibetan book of healing arts called Sibu Yi Dian. It was even used by Genghis Khan to power his army and their horses for stamina and recovery from combat.  It contains more than 190 nutrients and organic substances which are beneficial to the human body in several forms. Now, the miracle berry that we are talking about is called the sea buckthorn.

So what exactly is a sea buckthorn? It surely does sound very interesting to the ears, doesn’t it? Well, let us tell you more about it – It is a tiny yellow orange berry which grows primarily in the higher regions of the Himalayan Mountains, (Spiti Valley), which makes it so power-packed. This particular fruit becomes a superfood because of its very location. It is a berry that grows in the wilderness of high altitudes, cold climates and rough weathers. Sea buckthorn berry endures the harshest of climatic conditions namely scorching heat, strong winds, and heavy snow fall and sun radiation. Ironically, it is braving these extreme weather conditions that helps lock-in an array of powerful nutrients. For just like the “survival of the fittest” Darwinism, these berries pack-in a punch to survive the harshest of conditions. This is why locals call it the “Holy Fruit”.

Now that we are aware of its existence and its location, what good does it do to the human body? Well that’s the million dollar question everyone’s after. What makes sea buckthorn a superfood? Although it is one third of the size of a blueberry, it packs 12 times the amount of vitamin C as an orange which makes sea buckthorn one of the most nutritious food in the world. The leaves, berries and roots can all be used in different forms which makes it a complete food.  Some of the most sought after benefits of this fruit are:

  • Boosts Immunity: Seabuckthorn has the highest amount of Vitamin-C as compared to any other fruits in the world which helps increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections.
  • Helps in losing weight and fights diseases: It contributes to weight loss by preventing the storage of excess fat which automatically helps in keeping the body free of heart diseases and diabetes.
  • Makes the skin glow: Sea buckthorn has the potential to give skin creams a serious run for their money. It’s high vitamin C content helps in keeping the skin firm, elastic, wrinkle-less and is known for its restorative properties.
  • Calms the skin: For irritated skin, sea buckthorn can be extremely therapeutic.  Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation (and therefore redness), burning and itching while vitamin E helps heal skin quickly and reduce scarring.

These are just some of the many benefits of sea buckthorn. Make sure you include this wonder berry in your diet as soon as possible, because this seems to be the ultimate cure for everything!
